Essential DVDs For Gardeners: by Erin Stachowiak

Erin Stachowiak

Audiovisual post—07/10/09
In the first year after buying a house, I’ve discovered a lot of great plants in our yard. Most people probably don’t think about landscaping when buying a house in the middle of February. Irises, daffodils, hens and chicks, meadow sage and chives have all sprung up from the earth. I’ve even had tomato plants from the previous owners take seed to produce the most delicious cherry red tomatoes. Thanks to the green thumb I got from my grandpa, I started planting my own vegetable garden this year, too. It makes me so happy to be able to carry on the tradition of eating green beans right off the vine, shelling peas and shucking corn. There are plenty of how-to, inspirational and kids’ DVDs all about gardening and landscaping, please check TitleTales today!

Candlewick’s New Imprint—Templar Books: by Lori Fennel

Lori Fennel

Children’s post—07/10/09
With only eight to ten titles a season so far, Candlewickn’s new imprint, Templar Books, sure covers a lot of ground: two graphic novels, the launch of a juvenile fiction adventure series, picture books, novelty packed nonfiction and folktales, a collection of Bible stories, deluxe editions of classics and a board book already—and thatn’s just across two seasons! My personal favorite is Alex and Lulu: Two of a Kind, but I haven’t gotten to read quite all of them yet.

Celebrating Those Who Labor: by Kim Stack

Kim Stack

Adult Special Topics post—07/10/09
In the United States, we celebrate a national holiday every September honoring those who labor. If you are thinking about Labor Day, there are a lot of recent adult fiction titles in which the characters’ employment influences the story. The jobs run from actress (The Family Man) to zookeeper (Hannahn’s Dream). Some titles were selected because the jobs are unique: the carpet layer in The Way Home; the roadside assistance operator in Liars Anonymous; and the lobster boat worker in Stern Men. You will have to read Feelers for yourself to understand the job a feeler has! Plus some books just have odd combinations for couples: the paleontologist and animal behaviorist in The Great Perhaps; the rancher and scientist who are the parents in The Selected Adventures of T. S. Spivet; and the NASCAR driver and social worker who find each other in Total Control. Choose some great reads that are entertaining (not work) for the holiday weekend!

This month, we sit down with Ken Burns

Ken Burns has been making films for more than 30 years. Since the Academy Award-nominated Brooklyn Bridge in 1982, Ken has gone on to direct and produce some of the most acclaimed historical documentaries ever made. The late historian Stephen Ambrose said of his films, “More Americans get their history from Ken Burns than any other source.” Burns’ documentaries have been nominated for two Academy Awards (Brooklyn Bridge in 1982 and The Statue of Liberty in 1986) and have won seven Emmy Awards, mostly from The Civil War and Baseball.
